Document Checklist for Your 2026 Tax Return
The federal return for 2026 is the one you file in 2027. W-2s and many 1099s arrive by the end of January. Brokerage statements and Schedule K-1s often come later. A checklist now tells you what to watch for and what to pull from your own files.
Florida does not impose a personal income tax, so the return for a Florida resident with no other state is the federal one. Living or working in another state can still create a filing there. We can prepare it or tell you if it is outside our scope. Blackpoint CPA is Central Florida-based, serving clients statewide and remotely. Households in Windermere gather the same records. Preparation, notices, and amended returns are on our individual tax page.
Bring these for almost every return
Bring the legal name, Social Security number, and date of birth for each person on the return. If the IRS issued an Identity Protection PIN, bring it. The IRS explains that PIN at IRS.gov/IPPIN. A missing PIN can cause a rejection. Last year's return shows an overpayment applied to this year, a capital-loss carryover, or other items that affect 2026.
Bring every information form that reports income, even when you think the amount is small:
- Form W-2 from each employer. Keep every copy. Box amounts for wages, federal withholding, Social Security, and Medicare have to match what we enter. If a W-2 shows wages in another state, bring that copy too.
- Form 1099-INT and Form 1099-DIV for interest and dividends, including accounts you closed during the year.
- Form 1099-B or a consolidated brokerage statement for sales of stock, mutual funds, and other securities. The statement that shows cost basis saves a reconstruction later.
- Form 1099-R for pensions, IRA distributions, and rollovers. A rollover still needs the form. Bring the records that show where the money went and when.
- Form SSA-1099 if you received Social Security benefits. How much is taxable depends on the rest of the return. We still need the form.
- Form 1099-G for unemployment compensation or a state refund that is reported to you. Unemployment is taxable on the federal return.
- Schedule K-1 from a partnership, an S corporation, or a trust. These often arrive after the January forms. We cannot finish the return without them. Bring each one when it comes, even if the rest of the packet is already with us.
Also bring the confirmations of federal estimated tax payments you made for 2026, and the amount of any 2025 overpayment you applied to 2026. The dates and the dollar amounts should match what you sent. If you want the refund deposited directly, bring the bank routing number and the account number, and tell us whether the account is checking or savings.
Bring these if they apply to you
Not every household has these. Bring them when you do. Skipping one you actually received is how a notice starts.
Form 1099-K. Bring any Form 1099-K you received. It reports certain payment-card and third-party network payments. The IRS explains the form on its understanding your Form 1099-K page. The gross amount is not automatically all profit. It can include a reimbursement, money you collected for someone else, or a sale for which you have a cost. Bring the platform summary and a note on what the deposits were. If you had none of that activity, you do not need to hunt for a form you did not receive.
Tips and overtime. If you received tips or overtime pay in 2026, bring pay stubs that show overtime hours and the overtime premium, a tip log, and any written statement from your employer. Tips are income whether or not they were on a card. The W-2 shows what the employer included. Your records show the rest, and they are what we use if a deduction for qualified tips or qualified overtime compensation applies. We follow the Form 1040 instructions in effect for the 2026 return. Bring the records either way.
Self-employment and side work. If you were paid for work outside a W-2, bring Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC, invoices, and a list of business expenses with the receipts behind them. Bring Form 1099-K here too if a customer paid you through a payment app or a card. Income the forms missed still gets reported. The forms are a cross-check, not a ceiling.
A business you own. If you have a partnership, an S corporation, or a sole proprietorship with its own books, the individual return waits on that business return. Bring the K-1 when the business return is done. Do not invent the K-1 from a bank deposit.
Deductions, credits, and life events
Bring the records if you had the expense. We will tell you whether they change the return. You do not have to decide that before you bring them.
- Home and taxes. Form 1098 for mortgage interest, and the property tax bills you actually paid in 2026. Florida property tax is not a state income tax. The bill still matters if you itemize. Bring records of cash charitable gifts even if you don't itemize. For any single gift of $250 or more, the IRS requires a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the charity. The contents are on the IRS page for written acknowledgments. A canceled check alone is not that acknowledgment.
- Medical and insurance. If you bought coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, bring Form 1095-A. The premium tax credit is reconciled from that form. The IRS describes it on the About Form 1095-A page. A missing 1095-A is a common reason a return stops. Medical receipts matter if you itemize. Bring them. We will see whether they clear the threshold the 2026 instructions use.
- Family. If you paid for care for a child or another qualifying person so you could work, bring the provider's name, address, taxpayer identification number, and the amount you paid. If you paid or received alimony, bring the divorce or separation instrument and the amounts, and tell us the date of the instrument. The year of the instrument changes the treatment. We read the document rather than assume.
- Education and health accounts. Form 1098-T from the school, Form 1098-E for student loan interest, and receipts for qualified education expenses you paid. For a health savings account, bring Form 1099-SA and Form 5498-SA, plus the amounts you or your employer contributed.
- Retirement contributions you made yourself. If you contributed to a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA for 2026, bring the confirmation and the date of the contribution. A contribution made in 2027 for the 2026 year should be labeled that way by the custodian. Bring that record so we do not put it on the wrong year.
- Digital assets and other sales. If you sold, exchanged, or were paid in digital assets, bring the transaction history from the platform. If you sold a car, a home, or other property, bring the closing statement and what you paid for the property. A sale of a main home has its own reporting rules. We need the closing disclosure either way.
- Life changes. A marriage, a divorce, a new child, a move, or a death in the family changes who is on the return and which records we need. Tell us about the change when you share your documents. We'll tell you how to send documents securely. Do not wait until we ask why a Social Security number is new.
How to send it
Put last year's return and the identity information in first, then the income forms, then anything from the second list. We'll tell you how to send documents securely. If a form is wrong, ask the payer for a correction and tell us. We prepare the federal return from what you bring. We do not promise a refund amount. If an IRS notice arrives later, share it with us and use the date printed on the letter. We'll tell you how to send it securely. That work is on the individual tax page.
