Your Form 990 is due Monday, November 16: a last-two-weeks checklist
Two groups of nonprofits share the same deadline this year: Monday, November 16, 2026.
- June 30 fiscal year-end. If your fiscal year ended June 30, 2026 (common for CTSO state associations and school-linked groups), your original Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-N for that year is due November 16.
- Calendar year, already extended. If your year ends December 31 and you filed Form 8868 last spring, your extended 2025 return is due November 16.
Both normally fall on November 15. That's a Sunday this year, so the deadline moves to the next business day.
First, know whether you can still extend
- June 30 filers can file Form 8868 by November 16 for one automatic six-month extension, to Monday, May 17, 2027.
- Calendar-year filers already on an extension can't extend again. November 16 is the final date.
- The 990-N e-Postcard can't be extended, but it only takes a few minutes online.
Confirm which form you file
| Form | Generally for organizations with |
|---|---|
| 990-N e-Postcard | Gross receipts normally $50,000 or less |
| 990-EZ | Gross receipts under $200,000 and total assets under $500,000 |
| Full Form 990 | Gross receipts of $200,000 or more, or total assets of $500,000 or more |
Our 990 vs. 990-EZ vs. 990-N guide walks through the thresholds.
The checklist
- Year-end bank and credit card statements, reconciled to your books.
- A profit and loss and balance sheet for the full fiscal year.
- Your board and officer list, with titles, average hours and any compensation.
- Revenue by source: dues, conference registration, sponsorships, grants and donations.
- Contractor payments and the W-9s behind them.
- Last year's return, so balances carry forward cleanly.
- Time for review. Leave a few days for whoever signs the return to read it before November 16.
Florida organizations: the FDACS connection
If your organization solicits contributions in Florida, your charitable solicitation registration renewal with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) asks for financial information. A professionally prepared 990 may satisfy that financial-statement requirement. A 990-N doesn't, so 990-N filers still need financial information for the renewal.
Don't skip a year
An organization that doesn't file for three consecutive years automatically loses its tax-exempt status. Filing on time each year keeps that off the table.
